Absolute Value

Absolute Value: of a number x is its distance from zero. It is wwritten as (x). It is always a nonnegative number, and is only zero when x= 0. For Example:
(15) =15 (-15) = 15 (0)=0

Please note the parenthesis should be straight bars.

Geometric Definitions

Area: refers to the amount of space inside a two-dimensional fiqure, like a square or a triangle.
You can think of area as the amount of paint needed to paint a wall.
Surface Area: refers to three-dimensional figures; it is the amount of space inside each surface, or face, of a three-dimensional fiqure. You can think of surface area as the amount of paint required to fill an entire room with paint.
Volume: refers to the amount of space contained inside the fiqure. You can think of volume as the amount of paint required to fill an entire th paint.

Solving Equations: Two Steps

Solving Equations
Two Steps equations require two steps to solve. When solving equations, we use REVERSE
order of operations: For Example: 3x+ 5=-1
We are multiplying x by 3 and adding 5. We need to reverse this and do the opposite to find our answer. To undo the adding 5, we subtract 5. Then to undo the multiplying by 3, we divide by 3. 3x +5 =-1
-5 =-5 Subtract 5 from each side
3x = -6 Divide each side by 3

x =-2

Solving Equations

Solving Equations

One Step Equations usually involve addition. subtraction, multiplication or division.
The key is to undo everything using the opposite operation. For example:
x+50 = 100 subrtract 50 from both sides
-50 =-50
x =50

Basic Probability

Basic Probability

Probabilities are expressed as fractions or decimals.

Question: If you tossed a coin, what is the probability that it would land on heads?

the number of ways an event can occur
the number of total possibilities

either heads OR tails =
two

1/2 = 0.50

Study Question

How are Piggy, his glasses and the conch symbolically linked in the novel?

Piggy represents weakness but, he also represents order and fairness. Piggy's glasses represent represent order or civilization because without the glasses there would be no fire. The boys would be doomed. The glasses were used to start a fire. The fire was used to signal for help and used to cook. The conch represented authority and order.
After reading the book Lord of The Flies by William Golding,I still did not like the book. It was somewhat predictable and somewhat confusing. I knew harm would come to Piggy early in the book because Piggy was weak. He was fat. He was sickly. He could not see without his glasses. And, the other boys made fun of him. From the beginning, the book was unrealistic to me because who would allow so many boys to travel by themselves at such a young age. Where were the adults? Not even one adult appeared in this book until the end.
I think the theme of the book shows that at any age and in the right environment children can become uncivilized. When this boys were first stranded they were innocent and decent. But, as things went along they became evil and savage like.

chapters 11-12

There are only four non-hunters, Ralph, Piggy and the twins. They decide to go to Castle Rock because Piggy is almost blind without his glasses. They need Piggy's glasses so he can see. Also, there is no signal fire. They want to talk to Jack
Ralph uses the conch to call them but, the hunters throw stones. Jack and Ralph fight. Roger pushes a boulder down which kills Piggy. Ralph excapes into the jungle fleeing fof his life. Most of the jungle is burning due to Jack trying to smoke Ralph out. Ralph runs toward the beach running into sailors. Ironically, the fire that Jack started helped Ralph escape.

chapters 9-10

This chapter called A View of Death is title right because Simon is savagely killed. Jack orders the boys to do their dance. The boys go wild. Even Ralph and Piggy dance. Suddenly,something is calling out to them. The boys do not realize it is Simon. They beat and stab him. Simon is dead.The next chapter, Ralph and Piggy use excuses for the cause of the Simon's death. Piggy feel that they are not directly responsible. Ralph says that they are accomplices. Ralph does not deny what has happened. It was a evil thing. But, Jack refuses any wrong doing. He feels that they killed a beast.
Jack has gained power now because the majority of boys are in the state of fear. Jack and the other hunters steal Piggy's glasses. This causes Ralph to feel hopeless.

Lord of the Flies Chapters 6-8

Chapters 6-8 are confusing. The beast in these chapters is the dead parachustist. Everbody is scared but, everbody should have been scared when the plane first crashed. Ralph is losing his faith that he will get off of the island.For the first time, Ralph hunts. He likes hunting. Ralph is a good guy but, when Ralph trys to kill a pig this shows that everybody is a potential killer. The group breaks up. Jack is becoming the most powerful. Simon talks to the Lord of Flies. The information he gets causes him to faint.

Lord of Flies Chapter 1-5

The first chapters 1-5 of Lord of the Flies, I thought were unrealistic because if I was marrooned on a tropical island with a group of boys I would be worried out of my mind. I would be wondering what I was going to eat and where would I sleep. These boys seemed clueless. They seemed to worry about power. Ralph and Jack seemed like they have authority issue.Piggy seeems like a wimpy kid. He seems smart but,he is not so sure of himself.
